The airflow problem is a common HVAC issue faced by many homeowners. If you ignore this airflow issue, the compressor of your HVAC system can stop working. It is believed that the compressor is the heart of any HVAC system. So, if your compressor stops working, you’ll probably need to change the whole HVAC unit, which will be very expensive. But how can you know whether you have an airflow problem or not? The first thing you’ll notice is the pressure imbalance, then weak airflow, and finally, warm air blown by your air conditioner. However, the causes behind this airflow problems are easy to fix and cheap. So, here is a detailed description of the causes of an HVAC airflow problem.

5 Causes of HVAC Airflow Problems

1.   Dirty AC Filter

If you haven’t changed the AC filter for quite a long time, you’ll face this problem. The air filter has a lot to do with the air quality of your home. The air filter removes small particles, debris, dust, etc. from the air and protects your equipment from debris. When you don’t replace your filter for a long time, it gets clogged with debris, and it blocks the airflow. You’ll notice hot and cold spots in your house when you have a clogged air filter. Also, a clogged air filter can damage other parts of your HVAC system. So, if you don’t want to face this problem, try to change the air filter according to the manual book, and you should do it once in a month according to the usage.

2.   Low Refrigerant Level

This is a common issue for the old HVAC systems. If your air conditioner is old and not well maintained, refrigerants can leak from your air conditioner. When the refrigerant level drops down from the normal level, you’ll start noticing less cooling and airflow issue. Also, if you have a leak in your HVAC system, it’ll decrease the efficiency of your HVAC system gradually. You should call an HVAC professional to check whether your air conditioner has a refrigerant leak or not and, if found, fix it as soon as possible.

3.   Bigger Isn’t Always Better

If you think that bigger is better for the HVAC unit, you’re wrong. HVAC systems with high capacity run inefficiently and cycles on-off regularly. As a result, your air conditioner won’t be able to remove humidity from the air, which makes the air in your home very uncomfortable and stuffy. So, you should only buy an air conditioner according to the size of your home or office space. Also, you can contact the HVAC professional about the ideal size of your HVAC system and install it accordingly.

4.   Dirty Coils

An air conditioner coil is an outdoor unit, and it releases the heat, which was removed from inside. As it’s placed on the outside, it can become very dirty quickly. When the coil becomes dirty, it needs to work more to release the heat and cool your home. As a result, you can face the airflow issue. If you don’t want to face airflow because of the dirty condenser coil, you should clean your condenser coil regularly. You can clean your coil once or twice in a year, which isn’t that regular compare to the air filter. So, you shouldn’t neglect the condenser coil at any cost.

5.   Old HVAC Design

If you have shifted to a new place without updating the HVAC system, you may face a problem in the airflow because the size of the ductwork may not match with the new residence. As a result, your air conditioner cannot provide the desired cooling. So, you should consult with an HVAC professional before shifting to another house.
