There are many factors affecting the efficiency of your HVAC system, such as the age of the HVAC system, condition, model, etc. The more energy-efficient your HVAC system is, the less electricity your air conditioner will consume. If you’re worried about paying high electric bills, here are a few ways to lower your air conditioner’s power consumption.

4 Ways to Lower Your Air Conditioner Power Consumption

1.   Buy or Replace an Energy Efficient Air Conditioner

If you’re thinking of buying or replacing a new air conditioner for your house or office space, you should buy new model or replace the older one with the new one which has energy efficient label on it. When you buy this kind of air conditioner, this will definitely save you a significant amount of money as it’ll be consuming less electricity. Most new HVAC systems have unique features that make the air conditioner more energy-efficient and also ensures your comfort. The VRF or variable refrigerant flow is one of those technologies which are installed in the air conditioner to make the HVAC system more energy-efficient.

Your old air conditioner may run in full power all the time. But when you buy an air conditioner that has VRF technology, it’ll run according to the condition of your room. That means that your HVAC system will consume energy when needed and your air conditioner will consume less power. The VRF system also allows you to control the temperature of different rooms separately. So, the smarter your air conditioner is, the less it’ll consume electricity and save money.

2.   Change the Clogged Air Filter

The air filter is a very crucial part of your air conditioner. Air filter purifies the air by blocking all the small particles and dust. As its main function is to block all the small particles, it gets dirty very quickly. When you have a clogged air filter, the air filter won’t allow the air conditioner to run at its full efficiency. As a result, your HVAC system will consume more electricity to run at its full efficiency and consume more power. That’s why it’s important to change your air filters regularly. So, when you have a clean air filter, you can save your money. Also, a clean air filter will provide you fresh air.

Even though most air filter packs mention 1 to 3 month to be the ideal changing period but you can stretch it out to 6 months. If you use your air conditioner heavily like 14-18 hours a day, you can wait up to 3 to 4 months.

3.   Use a Programmable Thermostat

A programmable thermostat can be a tool to make your air conditioner more energy efficient. A programmable thermostat sets the temperature accordingly and when needed. You can also schedule your air conditioner power consumption. Some programmable thermostat also allows you to control your air conditioner remotely. Because of that, you don’t have to worry about turning the air conditioner on or off while getting in or out. Also, if your rooms in your home need a different temperature at each room or corner, a programmable thermostat is the best solution for you. It works with high efficiency and saves your money on energy bills.

4.   Regular HVAC Maintenance

HVAC maintenance is very important to keep your air conditioner running efficiently. When all the parts of your air conditioner are running smoothly, its efficiency will increase automatically. Regular HVAC maintenance includes cleaning, fixing wires and electrical connections, fixing defected parts, changing the air filter, etc. You should ask an HVAC professional about when you should go for a maintenance check. At the end of the day, you’ll feel that the money you are spending on maintenance isn’t that much, and it’s worth paying.

You should call an HVAC professional once in every 2-3 months for HVAC maintenance.
