The compressor is the heart of any air conditioner unit, and when it stops working, your whole HVAC system stops working like a human body. That’s why it’s important to identify signs before the compressor collapses. Here are the signs of air compressor failure –

4 Signs of AC Compressor Failure

1.   Noise

Any abnormal noise coming out of any machine is a bad sign, and it indicates that there’s a problem in the machine. It’s the same for your air conditioner too. If you hear any abnormal noise coming out of the air conditioner that you’ve never heard before, chances are your HVAC system’s compressor isn’t working efficiently and may have a problem inside. This can happen because of wear and tear in the electrical parts of the HVAC system, or the motor of the fan has become dislodged.

So, when you hear the noise, you should call an HVAC professional to look after the problem, or you can do it by yourself. However, if you’re not an expert in handling an HVAC system, you shouldn’t try to fix the HVAC system by yourself because it can get worse. So, it’s better to leave it for the professional HVAC technician.

2.   AC is Not Blowing Cold Air Anymore

This is one of the first things you’ll notice when the compressor of your air conditioner isn’t working perfectly. You’ll not get proper cooling from your air conditioner when the compressor isn’t working, and sometimes you may feel warm air coming out of the HVAC system. However, warm air can come out because of the refrigerant leak, as well. When the refrigerant level is low, your air conditioner unit won’t be able to provide proper cooling. Also, when the refrigerant level is low, your compressor will feel the strain, and gradually it’ll lose its power. So, when you notice anything like this, you should call an HVAC professional to check whether you’ve got a refrigerant leak or compressor failure. You shouldn’t neglect this problem as this problem can cause you big bucks, and you may have to replace the whole HVAC system.

3.   Compressor Clutch isn’t Moving

This is also another sign of a problematic air conditioner compressor. The clutch on the compressor lets the pulley gear to engage or disengage from the compressor power. As a result, the compressor turns on when it’s needed. But the clutch can be stuck in one place, and as a result, the compressor will keep running all day long. On the other hand, the clutch can break, and because of that, the compressor will stop working.

The compressor of the air conditioner is the heart of the HVAC system, and if you find that there is a problem in the compressor clutch, you should fix it as soon as possible. When there is a problem in the compressor clutch, it’s better to replace the whole compressor rather than the compressor clutch because it’s an efficient way of repairing, and it’ll save you money.

4.   Frequent Circuit Breaker Trip

If you notice that your compressor is losing power regularly and your circuit breaker is tripping, there may be a problem in your compressor because your compressor may be consuming more energy and heating up more frequently. As a result, your circuit breaker is tripping.

When you see this happening, you shouldn’t just go back to the circuit board and set the circuit breaker where it was before. You should call an expert who knows the system and repair where needed because the circuit breaker is doing its job which is protecting you. That’s why you shouldn’t neglect this problem as it can set your house on fire or can cause you harm.
