Different types of gas furnace noises & how to fix them

If you have your gas furnace installed near your bedroom or living room, you would want it to work silently as your refrigerator. However, the Gas Furnaces you have installed in your home can make an odd noise at times.

These noises can be very annoying especially when you are trying to sleep or just reading in the living room. But fear not, the common gas furnace problems can be fixed very easily and I am here to tell you how you can fix the noise coming from your gas furnace.

First, you need to know what are the different types of noise coming from your gas furnace. Then depending on the noise, you can take further actions to mitigate the noise once and for all.

Different types of gas furnace noises & how to fix them

1. Rattling sound

Sometimes when your gas furnace makes noise, you may hear something rattling inside it bangling against it. This is because something really is.

Reason – When a panel is not tightly put on the gas furnace unit, you may hear this rattling sound because the loose panel is banging on the other parts of your gas furnace.

How to fix it – Just make sure no panels or screws are loose on the gas furnace unit. If you notice there is any, first turn off the furnace. Then tighten up the panel or screw. Make sure it is not loose enough to bang on other parts and panels of the gas furnace.

2. Popping or pinging sound

This is a common noise that gas furnaces make, especially if it is ducted system, which it most probably is. This sound is like popping bubbles in a bubble wrap or subtle pinging noise.

Reason – This type of noise is mainly caused by the duct system, more specifically, the thermal expansion of the duct system. The duct system associated with your gas furnace may expand or contract as it starts to heat or cool. This could cause the popping or pinging noise.

How to fix it – To mitigate this type of noise, you must fix the air ducts system. Maybe you even need to change the whole air duct system to allow the heat and cold to settle in more room.

3. Grinding sound

Of all the gas furnace sounds or noise, this one is perhaps the most dangerous one because you most likely need to call for an HVAC technician for repair and servicing when you come across such grinding noise.

Reason – The grinding noise is associated with some type of broken parts in the internal system, most probably the motor bearing.

How to fix it – In this situation, don’t try to act like a know it all. Call the HVAC maintenance and repair guys or fix an appointment directly. Let them know the situation and wait for them to act. And yes, turn off the gas furnace while you wait for them to come.

4. Squealing sound

Squealing sound is also very common in a gas furnace and require opening the gas furnace unit to fix it.

Reason – This squealing can be caused by the belt that is connected the fan to the motor. The wear and tear can cause the belt to slip from its actual place.

How to fix it – In such cases, a simple belt replacement is enough.
