Green Leaf Air

I talk a lot about the challenges that come with AC services & repair and AC replacement. But this complication is not limited to Air conditioners only. Replacing and repairing other components of your HVAC system is as much challenging as AC repair & replacement. This includes Boilers, Furnaces, AC Condenser, etc. Today, I am talking about furnaces specifically furnace replacement.

Components that make your furnace

Before I talk about the replacement issues, I should tell you what makes a furnace so that you understand them properly.

1.      Variable-Speed Blower

The fan motor of the furnace is referred to as the variable-speed blower. As the fan speed can vary, they are called variable-speed fans. This unit is basically the component that ensures airflow with adjustable speed control. A good example of variable speed furnace is GoodMan 3 Ton AC System With Variable Speed Gas Furnace 16 Seer.

2.      Blower motor

The air produced by the variable-speed motor is passed through the air ducts using these blower motors. Since this motor circulates the air, it is also called “air cycling blower”.

3.      Air Filtration

The air filtration unit is an important component of any heating and cooling system. In this type of heating system, you’ll see an electrostatic air filter. How this works is – when air passes through it, the air filter uses electric charges. These charges work to trap the unwanted particles. Sometimes, the furnaces use HEPA Filters (High-Efficiency Particulate-Arresting Filters. These air filter might not be able to trap the unwanted particles like the electric filters but they can reduce the entry of these particles exponentially.

4.      Heat Exchanger

This is the part where the cold air comes to heat up, only to be sent back heated.

5.      Ventilation

These pipes lead to outside from the furnace. These are important for the heating system.

6.      Zoned Heating

Zoned heating system allows the heated air to pass from the furnace to each individual area or zone with the separate setting. This way, if you need more heating in the living room than the bedrooms, you can do that with thermostats and a control unit.

How will you know if it is time to replace your furnace?

If you are ready to retire your existing furnace, you should see whether it actually needs replacing or just calling for furnace repair would do –

1.      When your heating system is aging

When your HVAC System has aged enough, like 12-15 years, you will notice performance issues and this is the time when you realize they need to be replaced. Just call any HVAC companies and you’ll see a wide range of Gas Furnaces and oil furnaces in their collection.

2.      When they require frequent repairs

Whatever it is, a central ac unit, a heat pump or a furnace, if it requires constant AC maintenance & repair, it is time for a replacement.

3.      When it doesn’t provide sufficient warmth

When the furnace is not sufficient to provide heated air, it is time for replacing it with a new one.

4.      When the unit cycles on and off irregularly

If you notice the unit cycling on and off irregularly, you must consider a replacement.

5.      When the energy bills are increasing

If the energy bills are high, it means the unit is not as efficient when you bought it. So, go ahead and replace it.

6.      When it makes noise

If you are hearing weird noise from the unit, most probably the internal components are faulty. So, go ahead and call for a furnace replacement.

7.      When bad air quality is causing respiratory issues & producing odor

If the heating and air conditioning system is producing bad air, it will cause respiratory diseases. Also, they would produce a bad odor. This is when you need to replace the furnace.

If your situation is not one of these, your furnace situation can most probably be solved by a repair.
