During pregnancy, parents are concerned about dos and don’ts. But have you ever thought about the implications of bad indoor air quality and the role of the HVAC system in keeping the mother and the unborn baby safe? Bad indoor quality has various implications on both the mother and the child. In this article, I’ll talk about the effect of bad indoor air quality and why you should do a quick HVAC maintenance checkup before bringing the baby to your home.

3 Possible Negative Effects of Bad Indoor Air Quality on Your Unborn Baby

1.      Underweight Baby

According to a study published in 2010, bad air quality has an adverse effect on the baby’s weight. Usually, a healthy baby weighs about six to eight pounds. But due to air pollution, birth weight can drop by 0.69 pounds.

When a baby is born underweight, it can cause problems like disrupted internal organ growth, imbalanced blood sugar problem, eating disorder, etc. These problems will affect the overall growth of a baby.

2.      Premature Baby

Babies that are born prematurely are at risk of several health risks such as cardiovascular problems, neurological problems, retinopathy, permanent disabilities, etc. According to an SEI study, it’s found that those born prematurely, their mothers were exposed to fine particles. Again, other studies have found that bad air quality can lead to the birth of premature babies.

3.      Autism

According to the Harvard School of Public Health, it’s found that exposure to pollution can increase the chances of ASD babies by 2x. They have also found that women living in fewer pollutant areas are at lower risk of having this disorder in their babies.

To keep your home safe from pollutions, the HVAC system can play a crucial role. If the HVAC system requires maintenance, you should do it before the baby is born.

3 Reasons to Have HVAC Maintenance Checkup Before Your Baby is Born

1.   Fresh Air

During the last few months of pregnancy, to-be mothers women usually stay at home and require fresh air. But when the HVAC system doesn’t work properly, the mother’s overall comfort can be disrupted. Besides, when there is a malfunction in the heating and cooling system, your home can have several problems like, imbalanced humidity level.

But high humidity is the perfect condition for molds to grow. When there are molds in your space, you can have problems like odor problems, allergens, colds, etc. If these problems occur, it can seriously harm both the baby and the mother.

Again, newborns will require a controlled temperature to keep their immunity in check. But due to HVAC malfunction, this can get hampered, and you may find your baby in a vulnerable position.

If you don’t want to face any of these problems, you should do an HVAC maintenance checkup before the baby is born. It’ll keep both the mother and the baby safe.

2.   Sound Sleep

Good sleep has a direct relation with temperature. According to several studies, it’s found that mothers who had slept properly during their pregnancy had a healthier child. And those mothers are the ones who didn’t have premature and underweight babies. That’s why if you want your baby to born healthy, you’ll have to make sure that the mother gets enough sleep. And to ensure high-quality sleep, you’ll need a functioning HVAC system.

Again, good sleep is necessary for babies as well. During sleep, they start to grow and develop their brain. But due to lack of sleep, this process can get compromised, and their growth can be hampered. That’s why when the baby arrives at your home, you’ll have to make sure that your air conditioning system is functioning properly, and to make it happen, you’ll have to do HVAC maintenance prior to the arrival date.

3.   Low Heating and Cooling Bills

Newborn babies come with additional costs such as medical bills, accessory costs, diapers, etc. This cost can go higher if the HVAC system doesn’t function properly. Because when there is a malfunction in the HVAC system, it’ll lead to higher energy consumption, and eventually, your monthly electric bills will go up.

Again, when you have a malfunctioning HVAC system, it’ll create a lot of pressure on the HVAC system. As a result, your air conditioning or heating unit will need frequent repairs.

But HVAC repairs don’t come cheap. As I mentioned above, newborn comes with additional costs and this cost can go higher if you have to pay for HVAC repair fees and extra monthly electric bills. That’s why if you want to lower your costs, you should do HVAC maintenance before the baby is born.
