Air filter keeps your indoor air clean but, in the process, it gets dirty and clogged very often. In this article, I’ll tell you 3 reasons to change the air filter frequently.

3 Reasons to Change Air Filter

1.    To Prevent Expensive HVAC Repairs

The main function of an HVAC filter is to block dust particles and debris from entering your HVAC system. When you have a dirty HVAC filter, your HVAC system will have to run longer to produce the desired heating and cooling. Let me simplify this for you.

When your HVAC air filter is dirty and clogged, a layer of dust will start to form on your HVAC parts like a fan, motor, pulley, etc. As a result, friction in your HVAC system will start to increase. But excess friction is bad for any equipment. When there’s excess friction in any machine, including your HVAC system, there’ll be more wear and tear. Besides, excess friction makes your HVAC system to run longer. When this happens, parts of your HVAC system will start to degrade, and the life expectancy of the system will be reduced.

Again, when you have a clogged air filter, the airflow of your HVAC system will be compromised. As a result, you’ll start noticing overheating problems, compressor failure, etc. in your HVAC system. But all these repairs will cost you a significant amount of money and sometimes it’s irreparable.

That’s why it’s recommended that you should replace air filter frequently. You can take help from an HVAC professional to change the air filter, and you should replace it every 2 to 3 months.

2.    Energy & Cost Saving

As I mentioned earlier, your HVAC system will have to run longer to produce the same heating and cooling when you have a clogged or dirty air filter. But when your HVAC system runs longer, it’ll consume more electricity, and you’ll notice a sharp rise in the heating and cooling bill.

Again, a dirty HVAC filter can reduce the overall efficiency of an HVAC system. As a result, HVAC operating costs will be higher, and you’ll lose money.

HVAC air filters are very cheap compared to the heating and cooling that you’ll have to pay when you have a dirty air filter. If you’re planning to cut your overall living cost, you should change the air filter at first. When you replace air filter timely, you’ll notice a drastic change in heating and cooling bills.

There’re different types of HVAC air filters available on the market. You can try the fan filter as it’s more compatible and covers more area. However, if you’re confused about which HVAC air filter to choose, you can contact your local HVAC professional and purchase according to his or her suggestion.

3.    Increases the Lifespan of Your HVAC System

The average lifespan of an HVAC system is around 10 to 15 years. But there’s a common misconception about it. Homeowners think their HVAC system will run for straight 10 to 15 years, no matter what the HVAC system’s condition is. That’s why many homeowners don’t bother about the regular HVAC maintenance checkups or repairs. But this isn’t right.

This HVAC lifespan average is only applicable in an ideal situation. That means, all your HVAC parts will have to run perfectly throughout this period. But in real life, it’s quite impossible. However, if you change the air filter frequently, you can increase your HVAC system’s lifetime.

When you have a clean air filter, there’ll be less wear and tear in your HVAC system. As a result, all your HVAC parts will operate smoothly, and eventually, all your HVAC parts will be in an ideal situation.

So, the bottom line is that if you replace the air filter frequently, you can expect your HVAC system to run for at least 10 years or more.

How to Change Air Filter?

To change the air filter, first turn off your HVAC system. Then open the air filter slot and remove the old air filter. After removing the old air filter, hold it up to the light. If you cannot see through the air filter then your air filter is dirty and clogged. Now, take a new air filter and insert it into your HVAC system.

If you’re not comfortable in replacing the air filter, you can call an HVAC professional. He or she will do the replacement for you.
